Mac Dictation Not Working? A Practical Troubleshooting Checklist
Fix Mac Dictation step by step. Check the shortcut, microphone, language, permissions, Voice Control, and app-specific failures.
Mac Dictation can fail in several different ways. The shortcut may do nothing. The microphone may activate without producing text. Dictation may work in Notes but fail in another app. Voice Control may also be active, which changes how macOS handles spoken input.
Use the symptom to choose your next check. Do not change every setting at once.

Run this five-minute test first
- Open Notes or TextEdit.
- Click inside a new text field.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation.
- Confirm that Dictation is enabled.
- Press and release your configured Dictation shortcut.
- Say one short sentence.
- Check whether the input cursor shows activity and text appears.

If this test works, do not reset your microphone or reinstall macOS. Test the app where Dictation fails instead.
When the shortcut does nothing
macOS lets you customize the Dictation shortcut. Do not assume that Fn twice, the Globe key, or a microphone key is still assigned.
- Open System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation.
- Open the Shortcut menu.
- Note the displayed shortcut.
- Press and release that exact shortcut in Notes.
- Choose a different shortcut if another utility already uses the current one.
On keyboards with a Microphone key, pressing and releasing it starts Dictation. Holding it can activate Siri instead. Apple documents this distinction in Dictate messages and documents on Mac.
Close launchers, window managers, keyboard remappers, and recording tools for one test. If Dictation works after you close one of them, assign Dictation a shortcut that the utility does not capture.
When the Mac hears nothing
Check the input path before changing recognition settings.
- Open System Settings → Sound → Input.
- Select the microphone that you want to test.
- Speak at a normal volume.
- Confirm that the input level moves.
- Return to System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation.
- Select the same microphone under Microphone source.
Use the built-in microphone as a baseline. Disconnect AirPods, USB headsets, docks, and virtual audio devices for one test. Reconnect them after the baseline works.
If the input meter stays flat, Dictation is not the first problem to fix. Check the microphone connection, the selected input device, and the microphone mute switch.

When words appear, but accuracy is poor
Check these variables in order:
- Select the language and region that match your speech.
- Use a quiet room with less echo.
- Move the microphone closer without blocking it.
- Test the built-in microphone against your headset.
- Speak one sentence with a name, number, and punctuation command.
- Compare the result in Notes before judging another app.
Do not treat a single bad sentence as a universal accuracy benchmark. Accent, microphone placement, background noise, jargon, and language settings all change the result.

When Dictation works in one app but not another
This pattern narrows the problem. Test the app boundary before changing system settings.
- Click directly inside an editable text field.
- Try a new document or message.
- Reload the page or fully quit and reopen the app.
- Test another browser or editor.
- Try Edit → Start Dictation when the app provides it.
- Check the app’s own microphone permission if it records audio independently.
Community reports show that docks and external audio devices can create app or startup-specific failures. In one 2025 MacGeneration report, Dictation worked again after the user disconnected and reconnected a Thunderbolt dock. Treat that as an observed setup-specific report, not a general macOS fix. When Voice Control is active
Apple separates Dictation from Voice Control:
- Dictation enters spoken words into the active text field.
- Voice Control lets you navigate, click, edit, and dictate with spoken commands.

Decide whether you have a Dictation problem
Use this decision rule after the five-minute test:
